THAKADU RIVER CAMP / MADIKWE / NORTH WEST PROVINCE |
 |
 |
The Thakadu River Camp is set within the riverine canopy along the banks of the Marico River in the game rich Madikwe Game Reserve. The Thakadu River Camps consist of 12 tented suites, each of which features their own viewing deck overlooking the river. The tents are spacious and are beautifully decorated. Four of the tents are set to one side and make up The Little Thakadu, which is perfect for families or small groups of up to 8 guests.
The Madikwe Game Reserve is one of the few game reserves in southern Africa, which is malaria free. Located in South Africa along the Botswana border and 20 kilometres from Gabarone, this Big Five Game Reserve lies within a transition region between lowveld bushveld and the Kalahari thornveld. As a result the region is host to an incredible diversity of species from both ecosystems. The Madikwe game reserve is home to a large diversity of fauna and flora, including both the black and the white rhino. It is also home to the buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog.
The main camp is located between the Marico River and a small tributary of the Marico. The main area of this Lodge comprises an open plan lounge, dining and reception area, with the swimming pool and bar area offering views of the gully and river to the north. A traditional "lapa" falls within a glade of natural riverine forest. The décor of the Thakadu River Camp features a strong Afro-Asian Safari ambience, with use of natural stone, fibres, cloth and carpets as well as metal and wood featuring prominently throughout the camp. The influence of the river is very apparent, with the trees, birds and water providing a peaceful and tranquil mood within the camp.
The Thakadu River Camp is an ecotourism partnership between the North-West Parks, the Molatedi Community and the The Madikwe Collection. The community has a 45-year lease to operate a commercial lodge with traversing rights across the Madikwe Game Reserve. The concept is unique in South Africa in that the community owns the development, with substantial benefits accruing back to the community itself.
The Madikwe Game Reserve is characterised by warm and wet summers. The winter months from April to October provide travellers with cool temperatures an no rain falls to be expected. The winters are known to produce beautiful warm days, though the evenings and early mornings can be quite chilly.
