Dining at the Itaga Lodge

The Itaga Lodge in the Mabalingwe Nature Reserve of South Africa's Limpopo Province is known for its service excellence and delicious cuisine which is well complemented by a fine selection of wines.  The Itaga Lodge also offers a choice of cognacs, liqueurs and imported cigars which can be enjoyed after dinner.

Breakfast at the Itaga Lodge offers a scrumptious brunch which is served either on the swimming pool deck or in the lodge's main dining area upon return of the early morning game drive.  Breakfast includes cereals, juices, breads as well as a selection of fresh fruit, yoghurt, cheeses and cold meats.  A hearty 'cooked to order' typical South African breakfast can also be arranged.

Dinner at the Lodge consists of a three-course meals.  With white tablecloths and elegant candlelights a romantic affair is created in the lodge's restaurant.  This dining venue is located directly opposite the floodlit waterhole.  The Lodge offers a table d'hôte menu with a choice of two starters, two main course and two deserts.  Dinners can be interrupted by a thirsty rhino, elephant, buffalo or any other game species which frequent Itaga's floodlit waterhole.

The snack menu is available daily from 10 am to 4 pm.  This selection offers light meals such as hamburgers, sandwiches, salads and quiches.

Game watching

The Itaga Private Game Lodge has traversing rights covering more than 12, 000 hectares of malaria free bushveld which is home to the 'Big 5'. Elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hyena, warthog, a wide variety of antelope/plains game as well as bountiful bird life.  Guests are welcome to enjoy the thrill of an early morning or afternoon game drive with an experienced ranger in the lodge's open 4 x 4 game vehicle.

Mabalingwe Lion Enclosure

The Lions in this reserve stay in a separate high security, fenced area.  It is required to book for a visit to the Mabalingwe Lion enclosure. Visits to the lion enclosure at Mabalingwe should be pre-booked after arrival at the Game Lodge.

Zebula Animal Care Centre

The scenic Zebula Golf Estate & Spa is also home to a large variety of free roaming ‘non predator’ plains game as well as abundant bird life.  The Animal Care Centre offers the opportunity to see Lion Cubs or Bengal Tiger cubs.  The famous Zebula ‘Cheetah Run’ provides a chance to learn more about these fascinating and fast animals as visitors experience the exhilaration of observing them reach speeds of almost 100 kilometres an hour.

The Itaga Game Lodge in South Africa features eight eight unique thatch chalets which are individually styled with an African theme.  Each chalet at the Itaga Lodge in the Mabalingwe Nature Reserve is tastefully furnished with climate controlled air-conditioning for relaxed comfort in warm summers as well as chilly winters. 

The chalets offer private pergola covered patios where comfortable furniture invite for relaxation in a beautiful and tranquil setting.  Guests staying at the Itaga Lodge have the choice of selecting either a shower and bath or a shower only.

Most of the chalets additionally offer a screened outdoor bush shower which adds to the memorable 'Out of Africa' experience.  Electric hairdryers and power sockets are available.

Directions

From Johannesburg and Pretoria in Gauteng, take the N1 North, Polokwane (Pietersburg) / Platinum Toll Highway. Pass through the Pumulani Toll Plaza - (Approximately R6 toll fee for cars / mini-buses). Pass the Panorama Petroport on your left hand-side and continue through the Carousel Toll Plaza - (Approximately R27 toll fee for cars / mini-buses).

Pass the turnoff to the Carousel Casino on your left and almost 40 kilometres later, take the R516 Bela Bela / Settlers turn off (exit 238) and keep left.

At the T junction stop street, turn right into the R101 Bela Bela road, passing the Waterfront Arts and Craft Centre on your left, (A frame timber units) and at the next set of traffic lights, (immediately after crossing the railway bridge), turn left again into Potgieter Street and followed the road which curves around to the right and then turns left at the intersection (into Chris Hani Drive), passing the entrance to the Forever Resorts Warmbaths complex (on your left hand side).

Proceed to the next roundabout and then turn left, following the signs to Mabalingwe, Thabazimbi and Rooiberg, at that circle. Follow the road for approximately 28 kilometres. The Mabalingwe Nature Reserve signboard / entrance will be on your right-hand side. Once you have gone through the Mabalingwe main gate, take an immediate sharp left turn on to the dirt road, (gate attendant will remove chain). After turning onto this road, follow the signs to the Itaga Lodge, which is approximately 8 kilometres from the Mabalingwe main gate entrance.
