Dining at Marataba Lodge

Delicious gourmet cuisine with fresh African flavours is served either in the elegantly appointed dining room or outdoors on the dining verandah or, alternatively, under a glorious African sky in the boma.

Outdoor meals can be enjoyed in the garden or on the lower decks under the stars. For special occasions, incentives and celebrations picnic bush breakfasts can be arranged at an additional cost.

A wide choice of the estate and sparkling wines are on offer to compliment your meal. Gourmet cuisine with fresh African flavours is served in the elegantly appointed dining room on colder days. Marataba private dinners vary from a formal al la carte 4-course dinner to an informal themed platter similar to a tapas style menu.

Wildlife activities

This Lodge is home to the big 5 and some other large predators such as cheetah and brown hyena. Resident antelope include sable, kudu, eland, impala, waterbuck, tsessebe, hartebeest, wildebeest and many smaller species. Chacma baboon and vervet monkey are two species to be watched carefully for mischief, particularly around the lodge. Game Drives are offered to guests staying at Marataba Lodge.

The endangered Cape vulture colony in Marakele may be of great interest to bird watchers. Along with the vultures, some other bird species can be seen on the reserve. Day excursions to Marakele's Endangered Species Project are also available.

The air-conditioned conference room at Marataba Lodge is situated in an intimate setting and boasts state of the art equipment. The conference room can be configured into boardroom style for 18 delegates, cinema style for 26 and classroom style for 12.

The luxurious Marataba Game Lodge features exclusive tented suites all of which are saturated with the sights, sounds and smells of the African wilderness. These tented guest rooms are an intriguing mix of canvas and stone, exquisitely furnished and decorated.

En-suite stone bathrooms providing shower and bath as well as his and hers basins and a dressing room are the epitome of bushveld opulence. The 15 tented suites at the Marataba Lodge each have their own private deck overlooking the sweeping plains and meandering river below.

Directions to the Marataba Safari Lodge:

From Johannesburg International follow the R21 to Pretoria and then the N1 North toward Polokwane / Pietersburg. (You will pass through 2 toll gates). Take the R516 off ramp to Bela Bela (Warmbaths).
In Bela-Bela (Warmbaths) turn right at first set of traffic lights into Marx street (Waterfront Shopping Centre ahead of you). Continue across 1 intersection with Traffic lights (Engen and Total Petrol stations on either side) until you reach a T-Junction. The Elephant Springs Hotel is ahead of you. Turn left into Sutter Road (Thabazimbi signpost ahead).
At the T-Junction turn right into Minaar Avenue. From here follow the signs to Thabazimbi (R516). In Thabazimbi turn left at second stop street towards Lephalale / Sentrum. (At Total Petrol Station).
Travel for 32kms and turn right to Lephalale (old name for Ellisras). Drive 11.3kms and turn right to Rooiberg Road. Travel 8.2kms along the gravel road, the Marataba gate is on your left. Marataba is 310km from OR Tambo International Airport.
