Activities, Sports & Leisure

Wildlife activities

Morukuru is situated on private land in the Madikwe Game Reserve. The game drives at Morukuru are entirely tailored to fit in with what guests would like to see and what time they would like to see it. Morkuru also offers the opportunity for guests to walk free on safaris, exploring the vista of wildlife, flora and fauna of the African bush. Morukuru not only offers guests their private game-viewing vehicle and dedicated game ranger; but also an experienced tracker to assist in the game-viewing experience. Bush walks are only open to parties of a maximum of eight people, with children sixteen years and younger not allowed to participate for safety reasons.

Morukuru overlooks the Marico River, and many different species of fish live in its depths. There is a ranger on hand to provide fishing lessons, and freshly caught fish can be barbequed right on the spot. The double-storey bird hide offers an excellent spot to bird watch over the accompanying dam. Fully solar powered, surrounded by an electrified fence and fitted with toilet facilities downstairs, the bird hide can sleep a couple spaciously for a romantic evening by starlight or a bird watching breakfast.

Bush breakfasts, pizza picnics, colonial-style candlelit dinners atop the nearby mountain or freshly barbequed fish at the Riverside are just some of the culinary choices on offer.

African dancing shows

The local Morukuru dance team has been selected from the primary school in the nearby Molatedi Village. The students perform colorful and entertaining dances for visitors to Morukuru to enjoy.

Social Responsibility
  • Morukuru believes firmly in the concept of giving back to Africa in the form of preservation and conservation and through educating, empowering, mentoring and encouraging local communities. Well-known ecologist Declan Hofmeyr is a frequent visitor and advisor to Morukuru and helps to ensure the facility and operations are ecologically and environmentally sound. Morukuru gives time, staff and other resources towards the Parks Board to help with projects such as wildlife collaring, darting, monitoring and relocation.

Morukuru also partners will create local communities in the form of many different initiatives; the dancers who perform at Morukuru are sourced from the local primary school while a book donation project has been initiated by Morukuru staff, encouraging guests to donate books to the school library.

The eradication of the Sickle bush at Morukuru is a project that provides local employment while trees are also sold to guests, who can then choose to plant them somewhere at Morukuru, Madikwe or home. As a result of this project, the community is building a greenhouse to assist with the growth and harvesting of trees. Morukuru also recycles refuse which the city collects and resells to companies which deal commercially in recycled materials.
