Game drives are available during the morning and evening accompanied by a professional game ranger in an open game viewing vehicle. Special interests of guests including bird watching and star gazing can be catered for. The game drives usually are between three and four hours and include a sundowner stop and a coffee stop in the morning.

Walking safaris

Guided walks are often the highlight of an unforgettable African trip as one learns about the fauna and flora which surrounds one. These steps are carried out by specially trained and qualified game rangers.

Bird watching

The reserve is home to a large variety of birdlife.   A wide range of different raptors can be observed here which include Black Harriers, Pale Chanting Goshawks, Black-shouldered Kites, Fish Eagles, Booted Eagles and Secretary Birds.

Furthermore, this reserve is home to water birds such as the Three-banded Lapwings, African Darters, Malachite Kingfishers, the occasional Spoonbill, African Shelduck and the strange looking Hamerkop.  The colourful and magnificent birdlife is enough to keep a bird-watching enthusiast interested for a few days.

Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre

The aim is to rehabilitate and return all animals back into the wild.  The Shamwari Rehabilitation Centre is amongst the best in Southern Africa and is fully registered to provide veterinary care to young, abandoned, orphaned or injured animals.

On arrival, guests are met by a member of this caring team who presents the facilities and explains what it is that they do.  During the recovery phase, the animals are kept in custom built bomas.

A visit to Animal Rehabilitation Centre includes:

  • animal Hospital to see the facilities and view any current patients
  • animal bomas to consider any larger patients
  • a brief “behind the scenes” look at where the popular TV series “Shamwari - a Wild Life” was filmed and edited at the movie unit
Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries

It is the mission of both The Born Free Foundation and this game reserve to promote the conservation of species and the protection of habitat while maintaining a balanced and compassionate approach to the welfare of animals.

In partnership with the actress and conservationist Virginia McKenna's Born Free Foundation, the reserve designed the Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue and Education Centre to incorporate a museum and educational facility which has the goal to create an awareness of how wildlife is exploited in captivity around the world.  Guests are able to visit the 2 Big Cat Sanctuaries.  Travellers are able to see some of these rescued animals at the Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue and Education Centre.

Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre

"The Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre" opened in June 2012 based on the rhino devastation which the country is facing.  It has been created as a place of information for guests to educate themselves about rhinos and the frightening growing epidemic of rhino poaching in South Africa.

The Wilderness Foundation has created nine unique rhino displays each of which has a powerful message along with photographs, statistics and general facts to emphasise the effect poaching has on conservation, the country, tourism and indeed future generations.
